In my current read, the hero gives up his life (family/job) to protect his heart and his mate’s heart and life. He leaves her before either one of them can get hurt. Her father is trying to harm him or get him fired and he doesn’t want to emotionally hurt her by showing her who her father really is. I love him for it! It talks a lot to leave someone you love to better your life or theirs.

My favorite story is Ash from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series. What is unusual about him is that he had a terrible childhood, and he is still capable of feeling love.

A hero to me is kind and protective. One of my favorites that fits that description is Aiden from the Covenant series.

I love alpha heroes who realize just how lucky they are to find love in their lives. Plus the ability to laught at themselves, even if snarky, makes them memorable.

I haven’t seen or heard of Falling Skies, but your description made me think of The Stand. The last person you’d think of would step up to the plate and show that there’s more to him than meets the eye. I also love heroes who are seemingly victims of stereotypes. Like you said, the big burly guy who loves to cuddle or the alpha who can waltz. I love inked heroes. A lot of them seem to be lumped into a box labeled “bad boy”, but that doesn’t always have to be the case, and I love when those heroes prove people wrong.
