Fiona Jayde and Kicking Ass

This entry is part 7 of 15 in the series Pricked Party

Quick reminder, you can still enter my contest from Saturday or Regina’s from yesterday!

Welcome Fiona to today’s blog! She’s the only Blush sensuality author in the pack, but don’t let that fool you. She’s got a kick ass heroine and she’s here to talk about other women in fiction and entertainment that fit that mold!

Seeing as my latest release features a kick-ass heroine who is both vulnerable and strong, who may look ready to face of danger and yet is as emotionally challenged as the rest of us, I’d like to pay tribute to my favorite kick-ass heroines.

Buffy – from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I think she was one of the original kick-ass heroines. The idea of a little blonde girl kicking major ass has always appealed to me. (I’m a short brunette, but hey, I got an imagination). I love the idea of the girl doing the rescuing, having to use both smarts and fists.

Faith – also from Buffy: the ultimate bad girl trying to be good. There’s something to be said about complete fearlessness hiding a terrified girl who thinks no one will ever love her. (When will JW do the Faith series? I can’t say I loved Dollhouse)

Eve Dallas from the In Death Series by Nora Roberts: I’ve always loved Eve – the emotional complexity of a tough girl concealing a soft side. One of my favorite scenes in the series is from Glory In Death where Eve actually breaks down to admit her feelings for Roarke (Excuse the fangirl squee here… Roarke is just yummy). I love the internal and external conflict between what is perceived strength and what is perceived as weakness and finally finding the balance between the two.

Max from Dark Angel: Here’s one super-heroine who is trained to survive no-matter the cost, and yet who has a soft side. Jessica Alba did a great job portraying a tough chic with a soft heart. (Not sure what the bared midriff says about being a strong woman, but she’s got a good one, so why not show it off, right?)

Kara Thrace from Battlestar Galactica: Kara was my favorite character in BSG and don’t even get me started on how her storyline ended! She is the ultimate tortured heroine – strong and weak, fallible and cocky. This is a girl who’d smoke cigars before a battle and then clean up to look stunning in a scarlet dress.

Xhex from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R.Ward: I know a lot people hated her, but I thought she ROCKED! Here’s a woman who refuses to change her ways, one who fights be loved for who she is and not who she “should” be according to tradition.

Elena from Nalini Singh Archangels series :the combination of a dedicated hunter and a vulnerable woman underneath is a fine balancing act, yet done so beautifully. Similarly, Honor from the same series – now there’s a scarred heroine who packs some major weapons and who has to face her biggest fear in order to open herself to living a full life. (And Dmitri is YUMMY!)

Nikita – I love the Maggie Q rendition of her, beautiful and strong. I’m not sure if I like the age-old idea of using femininity as a weapon, but a girl gotta use what she got, I suppose…. And if you can kick major ass in six inch heels, then you must have an impressive sense of balance!

Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan – now there’s a brainy beauty who knows how to take care of herself. I love that most of her problem solving is through science, and yet if push comes to shove, she can slug it out with the best of them.

Who is your favorite kick-ass heroine and why? And does a heroine need to actually be physically aggressive to be kickass?

Blush sensuality level: This is a sensual romance (may have explicit love scenes, but not erotic in frequency or type).

Kyoto Hajime has been cold for centuries. He follows his brother through eternity, desperate to save him, anguished at the cost—the lives of those marked by Magik. Lives he has to take. But when Sunny Vartanyan comes into Hajime’s tattoo parlor asking for the dragon mark that will damn her, he cannot do his duty, even for his brother. He senses something different about the tough Vegas bartender, something deep within her that warms him for the first time in two hundred years. He inks a lotus on her hip instead of the dragon—beauty rising out of mud rather than power leading to darkness.

Sunny is slowly going insane. Since getting her lotus tattoo, she’s been tormented by dark visions. Voices—sinister, seductive—whisper unspeakable things in her mind. Only Hajime’s presence quiets the growing darkness inside her. And only the strength of their mysterious bond may save her.

Can I just say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE (x infinity) that you had Dark Angel on this list?

I was a fan of Buffy/Faith, but I was so obsessed with Dark Angel when it first came out that my friends were jokingly calling me Max — they even signed notes to me in my yearbook addressing me as such!

I was so sad when the show was cancelled…and the way it ended. UGH.

Anyway. Great list! Definitely some super tough and awesome chicks.

These are ALL my favs too. πŸ™‚ Of course Buffy at the top of my list too, she was really the first to be a fashionable kick ass heroine.

@Sidney, I think I am just catching the end of your pricked party πŸ™‚ I’ll have to go back now and read through your other guests.

Much success to both of you!

    Hi Melinda,
Is it sad to admit I still rewatch Buffy every year of so? Its almost like a comfort zone for me:) I never got into Angel funny enough – maybe because they didn’t have a strong female protagonist?

Ooh, great choices of fabulous heroines, Fi! I don’t necessarily think a heroine has to literally be out there with flying fists to be an incredible kick-ass heroine. Anna Wren from Elizabeth Hoyt’s The Raven Prince is a bit of a kick-ass heroine without ever throwing a punch (at least I don’t recall that she does ;)) She challenges gender restrictions without ever putting on trousers, but by picking up a pen and later, putting on a mask πŸ˜€

That cover for Dark Lotus is lovely, Fiona! Did you create this one?
