Welcome the very talented Zenobia Renquist to the blog! She’s a fellow Ellora’s Cave author.
Don’t forget about the giveaways posted yesterday. You can still win a book from me, and Carrie Ann Ryan’s contest is still running. Don’t miss those!
My husband and I aren’t lifestyle. He’s apathetic about the whole thing and I have no inclination to be spanked, bound, dominated, et al. In fact, I react negatively and violently to pretty much all that. Guess that means I’m not a sub. I’m pretty sure I’m too lazy to be a Domme. In the lifestyle or not, I love to write about it.
One of my publishers took her authors on a field trip to a dungeon (with the Dom’s permission) a few years back for some hands on research. It was a very enlightening experience that reinforced to me that I seriously don’t like being hit. The Dom gave us a demonstration of different floggers and I stepped up for the experience but for me it was a short demonstration. For others in the group, they found out that the lifestyle might be for them.
I’m lucky enough to be friends with a wonderful author and trained Domme—Stephanie Burke. She’s my sounding board in all things BDSM. I have pages and pages of IM chat where I ask her everything under the sun and then some just so I get my scenes right. I also belong to a BDSM chat group on Facebook that has several people in the lifestyle that share their stories.
Because I’m not in it, I want to make sure I portray it correctly. I research and ask questions and research some more. While my titles will probably never be in the deep end of BDSM, I do enjoy dangling my feet in the water with some D/s and light bondage.
My first attempt at BDSM was Collar and Bell (Forever Wicked) published with Changeling Press as part of their BDSM fairy tales line. Thanks much to Stephanie Burke for helping me figure out the title. I did a D/s retelling of The Miller’s Son and the Cat, which has a lot of similarities to Puss in Boots but they aren’t the same story.
The reader feedback I received from Collar and Bell gave me the nudge I needed to keep my feet in the water and write the Assistant’s Position Series, six Contemporary Erotica stories in four books from Razor’s Edge Press—the Erotica imprint of Changeling Press.
Before and After Work, Interoffice Relations, Private Meetings, and Sealing the Deal are about an office whose upper management indulges in BDSM play with the support staff while on the clock as a normal part of their business day. What started as a one-off story about an executive assistant named Rachel being fondled in an elevator grew into a mini-series that I really enjoyed writing.
From there, I started the on-going Daily Grind Series published with Ellora’s Cave in their Exotika line. Daily Grind is a Contemporary Erotica series about an exhibitionist housewife named Naomie in an open marriage and her day-to-day adventures of simply leading her life. I can honestly say I tried to keep this series from being BDSM. I touched on it in the first two books but I didn’t want that to be the focus. My characters decided otherwise. Since I’m a pantser (write as it comes to me instead of outlining), what my characters say goes.
What my muse says goes as well, which is why I have several other BDSM stories planned. This one of the things I love about being an author of Romance and Erotica. Just because I’m not in the lifestyle doesn’t mean I can’t indulge.
